May 2009 marked Compassion Over Killing’s second annual Egg-Free Pledge! People from all over the country opted out of eating eggs for at least 30 days to celebrate our animal-friendly spin on the industry’s self-declared “National Egg Month.”
Armed with our free Crack the Habit action pack loaded with tons of recipes, coupons, and other resources, participants were ready to stop eating eggs and start making a difference for laying hens, more than 250 million of whom are forced to spend their lives crammed inside wire battery cages so restrictive they can barely even move.
Your Feedback: Going Egg-Free
"After seeing photos of dumpster-sized bins filled with dead baby chicks, I decided I didn't want to support the egg industry anymore. My favorite vegan meal which happens to be a substitute for scrambled eggs is tofu scramble. I could eat this for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!"
-Melissa
"We're in our 50's and going egg-free because we're 'fed-up' with the way the animal-based food industry treats their 'products' with no regard for their lives or, evidently, ours!... Just like meat & fish, there are way better things to eat and we're not too old to learn how!!"
-Rosemary
"I love birds of all kinds and having chickens around seeing their intelligence and affection, I could not look them in the eye and turn around and eat their relatives!"
-Tierney
Your Stories: Favorite Foods & Recipes
One of the best steps each of us can take to make a difference for egg-laying hens is to simply leave their eggs out of our shopping carts. Happily, choosing egg-free foods is easier than ever! As people moved through their 30-day pledge, they told us about some of their favorite vegan dishes and products, and we’re excited to share some of their stories with you:
“This pledge opened my eyes to the fact that the animals in the egg and dairy industries suffer even more than the animals that are killed for their meat. Once I made the connection I became a vegan and I have never been more at peace. There are so many wonderful vegan foods that can satisfy any craving, but I think the one that I couldn't live without would have to be Tofutti Sour Supreme.”
—Jana
“I have a sweet tooth and love to make and eat fudge. I thought that when I stopped eating things containing animal products I would have to give up the food I crave, but no there are wonderful vegan recipes for anything you crave on the internet with instructions on how to adapt any recipe to a vegan recipe. This has been the best experience of a life change that I have had so far. I just wish that more people would find out about this.”
—Caroljean
“I think if we all get together to go egg-free, our planet and animals have a brighter future. Here is a picture of me and my favorite vegan products, my VegNews and Angel Food Bakery Vegan Marshmallows.”
—Stefanie
Thank you to everyone who signed our egg-free pledge—we hope that these 30 days are just the first of many!
